The Sims 4: Discover University is the eighth expansion pack released for The Sims 4, arriving as the game’s eighth major paid DLC. Developed by Maxis (The Sims Studio) and published by Electronic Arts, Discover University launched on PC and Mac on November 15, 2019, followed by Xbox One and PS4 on December 17, 2019, with a later Xbox Series X/S and PS5 release on November 12, 2020. It draws inspiration from earlier Sims titles such as The Sims 2: University and The Sims 3: University Life, with smaller elements borrowed from The Sims 2: Open for Business, The Sims 2: Apartment Life, The Sims 3: Ambitions, and The Sims 3: Into the Future. Closing out the 2010s as the final Sims pack of the decade, Discover University brought the long-requested college experience back to the franchise, letting Sims enroll, attend classes, join clubs, and chase a degree for the very first time in The Sims 4.

Discover University’s central theme is the classic college experience — enrolling in a degree program, juggling classes and grades, and building a social life around campus traditions. The expansion introduced a full academic system alongside a new world, reshaping how players could plan out a Sim’s early adulthood.

The pack’s new world, Britechester, is split between two rival universities and a residential district. The University of Britechester leans on classical, Oxford-style architecture inspired by historic British university towns, while Foxbury Institute has a brighter, modern look drawing on American campus life. Rounding things out is Gibbs Hill, an off-campus neighborhood where Sims can live while still attending classes. Altogether, the world spans 13 lots, giving each campus its own libraries, student unions, and lecture halls for Sims to study, socialize, and cause the occasional bit of collegiate mischief in.

Class schedules and degrees are the defining addition of Discover University, much like the club system was for Get Together. Sims can enroll at either university and choose from thirteen different degrees, including biology, computer science, art history, and even villainy. Each degree ties into specific skills, and every full-time career benefits from at least one related degree:
Unlike university packs in earlier Sims games, Discover University lets Sims interrupt a program between terms without losing their spot, and — for the first time in the series — allows Sims to attend university entirely from home rather than being forced to live on or near campus.
The pack adds the Research & Debate skill, used heavily for coursework, guest lectures, and the new Electromagnetic Research Archive Machine, plus the Robotics skill for building and customizing Servos. Servos return as a playable life state for the first time since The Sims 3, letting players build robotic Sims from scratch and even risk the rare Catastrophic Meltdown death. On the career side, Discover University introduces Education, Law, and Engineering careers, each of which benefits from a related university degree, giving new graduates a clear career path once they leave campus.
Sims can move into a dorm room or live off-campus in Gibbs Hill, take a bicycle across Britechester, and unwind in the student commons or library. School spirit runs throughout the pack, with mascot events, rival-school pranks, and themed gear for showing support of either campus. The expansion also expands on Get Together’s clubs system with new Student Organizations and a mysterious Secret Society Sims can be invited to join, adding a layer of exclusivity and roleplay to the college social scene. Roommates round out the experience, occasionally landing in a Sim’s dorm or off-campus household whether invited or not.
Discover University brings a wave of new build and buy items themed around dorm life and academic spaces, alongside several standout gameplay objects:
Discover University’s build and buy catalog leans into dorm furnishings and academic architecture — think cafeteria stations, personal storage chests, communal bathroom fixtures, and lecture-hall-ready décor.

The pack’s Create-a-Sim additions focus on campus style, from letterman-style school apparel to piercings and understated tattoos, giving Sims plenty of ways to dress for a lecture, a dorm party, or a big game against the rival school.

The Sims 4: Discover University landed a Metascore of 81, putting it among the better-reviewed expansions in the series alongside Seasons and Island Living. Critics generally praised the depth of the new degree and class system as well as Britechester’s split-campus design, with OpenCritic listing the pack as “Strong” and recommended by 100% of reviewing critics. Some reviewers noted the pack doesn’t quite match the liveliness of other expansions at a similar price point, and community reaction has been more divided, with some longtime fans comparing it unfavorably to the more expansive university content of The Sims 3: University Life. Even so, the class and degree system is widely regarded as one of the more substantial gameplay additions to The Sims 4, giving young adult and teen Sims a genuine sense of progression before they enter the workforce.
For players who enjoy structured, goal-driven gameplay — working toward a degree, managing grades and finances, or building a Sim’s story from freshman year through graduation — Discover University remains one of the more purposeful expansions in The Sims 4 lineup. Its combination of a distinctive two-campus world, a genuine class and degree system, and the return of Servos as a playable life state makes it a strong pick for anyone looking to add a coming-of-age chapter to their Sims’ lives.
